In Kaltern, the plots of vineyard land are traditionally referred to as 'riegel' (barriers). These small-scale vineyard designations have a long history and can often be traced back to the Rhaetian and Romanesque periods — over one to two millennia ago. Originally, the Riegels were used to identify agricultural plots precisely, and they still reflect the fragmented structure of South Tyrolean viticulture today.
Many of today's well-known Kaltern wines are named after these Riegel designations. This often results in idiosyncratic, historically influenced or sonorous vineyard names that may seem unfamiliar to outsiders but which have clear geographical and cultural significance locally.
Our location is above the historic Riegels Lotterbrunnen and Winkl vineyard plots, which are situated to the west of Lake Kaltern.
