The village of St. Josef am Kalterer See is part of the South Tyrolean market town of Kaltern (Italian: Caldaro sulla Strada del Vino) and lies on the western shore of Lake Kaltern, at an altitude of around 220 metres. The village is characterised primarily by its lakeside location and the surrounding vineyards. It is considered one of the lowest-lying and warmest settlements in South Tyrol.
The region is renowned for viticulture, particularly the cultivation of Vernatsch and Gewürztraminer grapes. In addition to several wineries, St. Josef boasts tourist facilities, accommodation and bathing establishments. The village is easily accessible via the South Tyrolean Wine Road and has direct connections to hiking and cycling trails around Lake Kaltern. The distance to the main town of Kaltern is approximately four kilometres.
